A beginner HIIT training workout usually combines short bursts of exercise with brief periods for recovery. You might complete bodyweight movements, cardio exercises and simple strength-based activities at your own pace.
At MissionFIIT Activity Hub, our instructors can adapt exercises to suit different fitness levels, so you do not need to be experienced or already fit before attending.
Your first class may feel challenging, but it should also feel supportive, achievable and enjoyable. Here is what you can expect.
What is a HIIT training workout?
HIIT stands for ‘high-intensity interval training’. It is a workout style that alternates between periods of activity and periods of rest or lower-intensity movement.
For example, you might exercise for 30 seconds, recover for 20 seconds and then move on to the next activity. A HIIT class may include squats, step-ups, lunges, core exercises, boxing-style movements or short cardio intervals.
The aim is not to work at somebody else’s maximum level. It is to work at an intensity that feels challenging for you. Beginners can move more slowly, reduce the range of a movement or take additional rest when needed.
At MissionFIIT, we want our classes to be welcoming rather than intimidating. Our instructors explain each exercise and provide alternatives, helping you build confidence as your fitness improves.
Do you need to be fit before starting HIIT?
No. You do not need to reach a certain level of fitness before attending a beginner HIIT workout.
Many people join a class because they want to improve their cardiovascular fitness, increase their stamina or return to exercise after a break. Starting at your current ability level is completely normal.
During an instructor-led workout, movements can usually be adapted. Jumping exercises may be changed to lower-impact versions, while strength exercises can be completed with lighter weights or bodyweight only.
You should never feel pressured to keep up with another person. Everyone has different experiences, levels of fitness and amounts of energy. Consistently attending classes and sensible progression are more important than trying to do everything perfectly in your first session.
What happens during your first HIIT class?
Most sessions begin with a warm-up to gradually raise your heart rate and prepare your muscles and joints for movement. This may include marching, gentle squats, arm movements and mobility exercises.
The main workout is usually divided into short intervals or exercise stations. Depending on the class, you may complete a mixture of:
- Bodyweight exercises
- Cardio intervals
- Functional strength movements
- Core exercises
- Dumbbell or kettlebell activities
- Step-based exercises
At MissionFIIT Activity Hub, our Circuit Training sessions combine HIIT, cardio and strength exercises across a variety of stations. We also offer Tabata and HIIT Step for people who enjoy fast-paced, music-driven workouts.
The class will normally finish with a gradual cool-down and stretching. This gives your breathing and heart rate time to settle.
How difficult is a beginner HIIT workout?
A HIIT training workout is designed to challenge you, but it should not leave you feeling completely overwhelmed.
You may breathe more heavily, feel warmer and notice your muscles working. However, you should still feel in control of your movement. If you become dizzy, feel unwell or experience sharp pain, stop and speak to the instructor.
Your first session is also a chance to learn. You may spend time understanding the exercises, finding a comfortable pace and working out which modifications suit you. As the movements become more familiar, you can gradually increase your effort.
What should you wear and bring?
Wear comfortable exercise clothing that allows you to move freely. Supportive trainers are important, particularly for circuit training, HIIT Step and other cardio fitness classes.
It is also helpful to bring:
- A bottle of water
- A small towel
- Any medication you may require
- A positive but realistic mindset
Try to arrive a few minutes early. This gives you time to meet the instructor, settle into the space and mention any injuries, health conditions or concerns.
If you have an existing medical condition, are pregnant or are returning after an injury, seek appropriate professional advice before beginning high-intensity exercise.
Can HIIT exercises be low impact?
Yes. A low-impact HIIT workout can still raise your heart rate and provide a full-body workout without jumping.
For example, high knees may become fast marching, jump squats may become controlled squats and burpees can be adapted by stepping backwards instead of jumping. A step platform can also be adjusted to suit your ability.
Low impact does not always mean low effort. Controlled movements can still build strength, improve coordination and support cardiovascular fitness.
Our instructors can show you beginner-friendly alternatives so you can take part safely while still feeling included in the class.
Choosing the right class at MissionFIIT
We offer several energetic group fitness classes in Hailsham, each with a slightly different format.
Our Circuit Training class combines cardio, strength and interval exercises for a varied total-body workout. Tabata uses short, focused work periods with quick recovery breaks, while HIIT Step combines functional bodyweight movements with a step platform.
We also offer Strength and Body Conditioning, Pilates, Yoga, Legs, Bums and Tums, Zumba and lower-impact classes. This means you can combine HIIT training with strength, mobility and recovery sessions throughout the week.
What should you do after your first class?
Drink water, eat a balanced meal and give your body enough time to recover. Some muscle soreness can be normal after trying unfamiliar exercises, particularly if you are new to fitness.
Gentle walking, stretching and a good night’s sleep may help you feel more comfortable. Avoid feeling that you must complete another intense workout immediately.
Most importantly, recognise what you achieved. Attending your first class is often the hardest step.
At MissionFIIT Activity Hub, we believe exercise should feel fun, inclusive and motivating. Whether you choose Circuit Training, Tabata or HIIT Step, you will be encouraged to work at your own level and make steady progress.
