Abbots Wood Manor Care Home
Every week, I visit Abbots Wood Manor care home in Hailsham to lead seated Dance Fit classes, and the residents’ enthusiasm is truly heartwarming - they absolutely love it and eagerly await my arrival.
The classes are filled with gentle movements tailored to their abilities, bring joy and energy to the group fostering a sense of community and excitement. For older people especially, seated dance helps improve mobility, coordination and circulation while also boosting mental well-being through social interaction and fun.
The play 50’s and 60’s music, often familiar tunes from their past has profound benefits, especially for those with dementia, as it sparks memories, reduces anxiety and enhances mood creating moments of connection and happiness.
I love seeing their smiles as we move to music that sparks memories and laughter. The highlight is always our grand finale where we finish with their favourite song and routine, Sweet Caroline. The room comes alive as we sway, clap and sing along.
I have also had the privilege to work in other care homes too over the last few years.
Schools
Over the past few years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to bring Zumba classes to a variety of schools, each with its own unique vibe and energy. I started at Lewes Old Grammar, where I led lively sessions for a mix of students, followed by Roedean and Benenden boarding school, where the enthusiasm of the participants made every class a blast.
Now, I’m thrilled to be teaching at Polegate Primary School, engaging a wide range of age groups, from young children to older students.
